Posting to status.lol from a Shortcut

In an effort to start using status.lol more often, I decided to create an iOS shortcut to post to it. Since omg.lol1 has an awesome [API](https://api.omg.lol, it was really pretty easy.

The first thing you’ll need to do is have your API key handy. You can find it on your Account page, all the way at the bottom. Once you have the key handy, it’s time to build the shortcut!

Here’s a screenshot of my shortcut (with a couple of notes added):

The whole thing is pretty straightforward:

  • Ask for text
  • Set a variable for the text
  • Ask for an emoji
  • Set a variable for the emoji
  • Add the status.lol endpoint from the API docs Post JSON to endpoint with your text and emoji

When you run the shortcut, you should see this window:

When you’re done entering your text and click the button, you’ll get a similar window to enter an emoji. Click done, and your status should show up on status.lol momentarily.

Another cool feature of status.lol is that you can automatically post your statuses to the social.lol Mastodon instance. I keep this option turned off and use the excellent EchoFeed to post my statuses to Mastodon instead2.

Anyway, that’s all there is to it. It’s really pretty simple, but I’d love to know if you’re using it! You can hit me up on Mastodon to get in touch.

  1. This is a referral link. If you aren’t already a member and you sign up through this link, I’ll get 3 free months of service. ↩︎

  2. Auto posting works great, this is just my personal preference. ↩︎
